In 2021 the scholarship scheme celebrated its 20th anniversary! Although covid-19 prevented any actual celebrations, the planned visit of the founders had to be cancelled.
Nevertheless, we are proud of the impact this program has had and deeply grateful to the many helping hands, students and alumni: every year 16 students are supported, to be increased to 20 in 2022. Contrary to other scholarship schemes, this support covers also a living allowance, to allow full focus on academics.
Over 94 people have benefitted from the scheme since its inception in 2021.
We support music workshops in several refugee housing facilities in Hamburg.
SpielTieger ev is an association that visits public housing facilities for refugee families in order to offer their children an opportunity to participate in cultural activities. The initiative is supported by the city of Hamburg. About 10,000 children live in these facilities for up to 5 years.
Historically, the Ketter-Foundation sponsored projects mainly in Uganda, Brazil and Nepal. With the increasing numbers of refugees requiring support, sponsorships of local projects such as SpielTiger eV became an additional focus.
In March 2016, the founder Dr. Uta Rojan-Ketter visited Nepal together with a group connected to the Plan International Foundation Center in Hamburg.
Sixteen years earlier, the Ketter-Foundation had financed two schools in cooperation with Plan International in the Makwanpur district, south of the capital Katmandu.
The earthquake of 2015 damaged both schools and the founder wanted to assess the situation first hand. Indeed, the Schuriyamai Secondary School in Hetauda is threatened to collapse due to damaged supporting structures. The Kalika Lower Secondary School in Fakel has lost its water supply and also suffered structural damages.
The schools, personnel and children greated Dr. Uta Rojan-Ketter, Friderike Schirr (Plan Foundation Center) and Claudia Reshöft with a lot of kindness and flower wreaths. The founder promise to help within the possible.
Seeing the schools operating after 16 years, giving 300 children in Hetauda and 140 children in Phakel access to education was a strong endorsement of the effectiveness of the Ketter-Foundation. Indeed we were moved to see the picture of the founders from the last visit in 2001 still on the walls of the school rooms.
A particular encounter re-inforced this sense of purpose and sustainability: a young woman approached Dr. Rojan-Ketter saying how she remembered her last visit in 2001. She was in 5th grade back then, today she is teach at the very same school…
In October 2015 Nils Ketter and Mathilde Grasset-Ketter visited the foundation's projects in Uganda.
The foundation runs a scholarship scheme for 15 Ugandan students at a time (please refer to the full description under projects). Our visit comprised meetings with them, a fair number of our alumni (>50 by now) and the local partners running the program. We were again impressed by the quality of the students, the professional and personal progress of our alumni and the potential of this format going forward.
We also visited the orphanage currently being constructed by Sister Valentine. It will be linked to the boarding school of St Theresa Kisubi which the foundation has supported for a number of years.
The financing of a new outdoor playground element in the Ronald McDonald House in Hamburg in 2011 was made possible by a generous donation from Haspa.
Since November, the Ketter-Foundation has both a new logo and a new website. The team from the Motum agency has worked with us on this new design.
Thank you to all who have given their time, energy and money for the Ketter-Foundation "Future for Children" - it was worth it!
We hope you will now enjoy even more reading about our work.
